This is the reminder you’ve been waiting for. Book your annual skin exam today!

Keep your skin looking healthy & happy by visiting APDerm today. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer affects one out of every five Americans. More than three and a half million new cases are diagnosed each year, which is why it’s so important that you have an annual skin exam. Your primary care physician may conduct a basic skin exam, but it’s always a good idea to seek out a dermatologist for a thorough examination of your skin.

Dermatologists also know how to treat disorders that affect the hair, nails, and mucous membranes. There are more than 3,000 known diseases that come under the practice of dermatology — including skin cancer, acne, and disorders like psoriasis and eczema.

As part of a complete early detection strategy, we recommend that you see a dermatologist once a year, or more often if you are at a higher risk of skin cancer, for a full-body, professional skin exam. To help you prepare and make the most of your appointment, follow these five simple steps.

  1. Perform a self-exam and come to your appointment prepared with notes about any new, changing, or unusual spots you want to point out to your dermatologist. If you’ve taken smartphone photos of a spot that has changed over time, be sure to show them to your dermatologist.
  2. Remove nail polish from your fingers and toes to enable thorough examination of fingers, nails, and nail beds, since skin cancers can form there.
  3. Wear your hair loose. Remove ponytails, buns, or hair clips so that your doctor can get a good look at your scalp where skin cancers can, and do, develop.
  4. Pack makeup remover to bring to your appointment and remove any makeup before your exam so that the skin around your eyes is easy to examine.
  5. Ask questions. This is your opportunity to get valuable advice and insight from a professional trained specifically in diseases of the skin. From explanations of unfamiliar terms to pointers on how to do a skin self-exam, your doctor is an excellent source of information!

Your dermatologist will consider all of your concerns in addition to performing a detailed check of your skin. If they see anything that they are worried about, they will discuss the concerns with you and explain what the next steps will be, if any. Early detection is always important, so even something that looks normal to you might be something that warrants further examination.

“Everything went well. It was just a routine check-up that I have done every year. I am a patient of Dr. Goos and he took some basal cell carcinoma off of me a few years ago. He likes to keep an eye on that as well. I’ve been with him a long time and I understand that he’s moving but will continue to work for Adult and Pediatric Dermatology out of a different office. It’s a little bit of a distance but since it’s only once a year and I want to stick with him. I am making the appointment at his new office for next year.” – Jeffrey D

“I had a very positive experience at APDerm for my full body skin check and for a specific area that the doctor recommended removal of a skin tag, which was optional since it was deemed not harmful. The assistant prepped me with a numbing injection and the doctor performed the removal quickly and painlessly. Both doctor and associate were very informative, pleasant, and professional and I was on my way with verbal and printed care instructions.” – Jim A

“I called and was able to get an appointment the following day which was very accommodating. It was so convenient that they have early morning appointments. I was able to get a 7:20 AM appointment and go before work. My doctor was very kind, patient with my questions, and honest about treatment options. Excellent practice, I would highly recommend APDerm.” – Carol W

“Very efficient operation; I was in and out in no time. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.” – Stephen P
