About Chad Schmigdal

Chad Schmidgal, MD, FAAD, is a board-certified dermatologist with expertise in medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology. With a distinguished career spanning military service, academic medicine, and private practice, Dr. Schmidgal brings a wealth of experience to patient care.

Dr. Schmidgal earned his Bachelor of Science in Quantitative Economics from the United States Naval Academy, where he also minored in German. He went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Texas School of Medicine in San Antonio, where he was inducted into the prestigious Gold Humanism Honor Society. He completed his transitional year internship at Navy Medical Center San Diego, earning the Intern of the Year award. He later returned to Navy Medical Center San Diego for his dermatology residency, where he served as Chief Resident.

Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Schmidgal is an accomplished educator, serving as an Associate Professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), where he mentors medical students, physician assistants, and nursing students. His contributions to dermatology extend to research and academic publications, with numerous articles published in leading medical journals.

Dr. Schmidgal is a decorated military physician, holding the rank of Commander in the United States Navy. He has served as a senior physician supervisor, overseeing medical readiness for over 10,000 sailors, and has been responsible for the credentialing and peer review of Navy physicians. He has also deployed as a Medical Department Head aboard the USS Rushmore, ensuring the health and safety of deployed personnel. 

Dr. Schmidgal’s dedication to patient care is reflected in his extensive experience, including per diem roles in Southern California and volunteer work at St. Leo’s Dermatology Free Clinic, where he provides care for uninsured patients. He has also passed the Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery Subspecialty Exam, further solidifying his expertise in skin cancer treatment.
